Admission to our graduate program is quite competitive. We expect 120-200 applicants and will accept 20 or less. Below are the general criteria for admission:
- Good academic records from food science, chemistry, chemical engineering, biology, or other related science disciplines (3.0/4.0 GPA, or above)
- Three good letters of recommendation from professors or other professionals
- Good GRE scores (460 verbal, 700 quantitative, or above)
- For international student who native languages are not English: Good TOFEL scores (minimum written test score of 550; minimum computer-based score of 213; minimum IBT internet-based scores of 22 for writing, 23 for speaking, 21 for reading, and 17 for listening). The acceptable IELTS score is bandwidth 7.
- Good personal statement (1 page description of why you want to obtain a graduate degree in Food Science at Rutgers)
Please note that meeting these criteria does not automatically guarantee admission, since there are usually more qualified applicants than spaces available. Admission decisions are based on holistic reviews of the applications, and thus failing one of the above criteria does not lead to automatic rejection.
Application forms are available on-line at the Graduate Admissions website http://gradstudy.rutgers.edu.All materials should be mailed directly to the Office of Graduate & Professional Admissions for processing. No part of the application packet should be sent to the Food Science department, this will delay the application process.
Apply and pay the application fee online for the best service (Internet Explorer 6.0 or better is required). Submit your application no later than 2 weeks prior to the program’s deadline. Early is better. Supporting credentials should follow soon after the submission of an application. Be sure to include your name on all documents sent. (Do not send applications or materials directly to programs, as admissions cannot provide status, archiving, or other vital services for applicants who do so.)
